Ha Noi (VNA) – The Republic of Korea (RoK) will deliver by this weekend the shipment of 50,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) as part of a six-party talks deal.

"The ship, carrying 22,600 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, will leave the southeastern port of Ulsan for the DPRK's Sonbong on July 29," Kim Nam-sik, spokesman for the RoK’s Unification Ministry, said.

Delivery of heavy fuel oil was one of commitments that had to be fulfilled as Pyongyang takes steps to denuclearise and shut down its main nuclear reactor, which produces weapons-grade plutonium.

The RoK is supposed to complete the shipment of 50,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil within 20 days of first shipment. The DPRK is to receive 1 million tonnes of heavy fuel oil in exchange for taking steps to shut down and disable its key nuclear facilities.

Earlier this month, the DPRK shut down its main Yongbyon nuclear reactor as promised in a Feb. 13 deal reached by the six parties – the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia, and Japan.

The United Nation's International Atomic Energy Agency verified the shutdown of all five nuclear facilities, including the sealing of some of the facilities, RoK’s Yonhap news agency reported.-Enditem
