RoK to provide additional emergency aid to DPRK
Seoul (VNA) – The Republic of Korea (RoK) on August 24 announced an additional aid package worth 37.4 billion won (close to 40 million USD) in emergency funding for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).RoK Unification Minister Lee Jae-joung said that the RoK decided to provide cement, iron bars, trucks, fuel, road restoration equipment to help the DPRK overcome the affects of severe flooding that rocked the country.
The decision comes a day after the RoK made the first delivery of 7.1 billion won (7.5 million USD) in emergency aid to the DPRK.
Minister Lee was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying that the delivery of the additional aid will start from mid-September.
Devastating floods have destroyed close to 14 percent of DPRK’s farmland, leaving more than 300 people dead and missing, and 300,000 people homeless. An estimated 46,580 homes of 88,400 families were either destroyed or damaged by the floods.- Enditem
