Taking one’s child to exams
VietNamNet Bridge – These days, it isn’t just students who are going to testing locations. Parents are coming along too. And as children rack their brains inside, parents worry their time away outside. As early as 5 am yesterday and the day before, when the first phase of the university entrance exam took place, cities nationwide looked busier than usual. Parents caused traffic jams as they took their children to exams by motorbike.
It’s doubtful which is more stressed during exams, students or their parents. Parents waited outside testing locations even after school gates had closed as exams started. “I feel uncomfortable leaving him alone.
Though I can’t do anything here, it’s still better than going home now,” said Mrs. Minh, who had passed a sleepless night the night before her son’s entrance exams to the Hanoi University of Transport.
So parents waited outside for exams to end, some reading newspapers, some sitting on motorbikes, some sitting on the ground, all wondering how their children were doing in there while understanding they had done every thing they could and it was now for the children to make their own efforts.
“Parents worry about their children all their lives. But at this particular moment, it is only themselves that they can rely on,” said Mrs. Sin from Ninh Binh province, who took her child to Hanoi for the exams to Hanoi Teacher’s Training University.
Her face looked calmer than others, chattering on cheerfully with reporters. Yet, hearing somebody say, “Why so long?” and “So impatient now”, she instinctively turned towards her child’s testing room and became silent.
And when school gates opened, students poured out to be showered with questions asked with great anxiety, “How did you do?” or “Was it difficult?” As parents heard the answers, their tense faces gradually relaxed. Some looked disappointed for a brief moment before saying words like, “Don’t worry, you’ll still have 2 more tests to go and improve the score.”
Then parents took their children home, cooking them nice meals, forcing them to eat and drink and sleep, doing anything else necessary for their children. And if only their children pass the exams and get accepted to college, all toil and tears will be amply rewarded.
“I toil my time away daily in the fields, but I still don’t earn enough for a living. Now, without education, my child will have as hard a life as mine. For the past few days, I have been feeling quite a bit more worried than him.
“The only thing he needs to think about is the exams. I’ve spent almost a million dong on taking him to exams. But I don’t regret it. As long as he passes, I’ll be perfectly happy,” said Mr. Nen from Ha Tay province, who spoke for many other Vietnamese parents like him.
