Cassava exports continue to surge

Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam’s cassava exports are booming and now earn hundreds of million of USD yearly.

Cassava export turnover has now surpassed other staples such as pepper, tea, groundnut, and fruits and vegetables.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the country in the first half of this year exported more than 1.5 million tonnes of cassava as it raked in close to 230 million USD, an increase of 41 percent in volume and 46 percent in turnover over 2006.

Annual growth rates of cassava exports during the 2000-2006 period was 40 percent on average.

Besides traditional markets such as the Republic of Korea and European Union countries, Viet Nam also finds outlets for its cassava products in China and several other Asian countries.

The first six months of 2007 has seen China purchase 189 million USD in product or 80 percent of the total turnover. Taiwan, the RoK and the Philippines also come on board with turnover of 10 million USD, 7 million USD, and 6.2 million USD, respectively.

To keep up with the pace of growth, authorities and businesses have linked up to invest in a greater number of growing areas, the upgrading of processing facilities and the introduction of new techniques.

Viet Nam is now home to more than 400,000 ha of cassava crops that are mainly concentrated in the Central Highlands, southeastern provinces, and northern mid-land and mountainous provinces.-Enditem
