Da Nang sees 35 percent more tourists in seven months

Da Nang (VNA) – The central city of Da Nang received 18,000 cruise visitors and 11,000 caravan tourists from Laos, Thailand and Malaysia in the first seven months of 2007, doubling last year’s figures, according to local authorities.

The city welcomed some 580,000 visitors in the first seven months, an increase of 35 percent compared with the same period last year, said the director of Da Nang Tourism Department, Ngo Quang Vinh.

The city’s tourism sector achieved turnover of nearly 300 billion VND (18 million USD), a year-on-year increase of 24 percent.

A number of tourism infrastructure facilities have been brought into operation recently, including the road to the northern beach on Son Tra Peninsula and luxury hotels such as Hoang Anh-Gia Lai Plaza, Riverside and Queen.

However, the turnover did not match the great potential and investment in infrastructure for tourism development, said Mai Duc Loc, head of the People’s Council of Da Nang’s Budgets and Economic Management Department.

He said visitors’ average stays in the city were short.

To boost the city’s tourism industry, a conference to discuss measures to tackle the issues encountering the city’s tourism environment was held by Da Nang People’s Committee in late July.

The chairman of the committee, Tran Van Minh, introduced the draft master plan for tourism development of Da Nang 2007-2010.

The city targets 332,600 visitors, including 143,000 foreign tourists, in the last five months of the year, expecting to attain turnover of 207 billion VND (12.8 million USD) in the tourism sector.-Enditem
