Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam’s farmers have been crucial to the country’s development and without their contributions the economic optimism may today would not be possible.
That was the Statement of Truong Tan Sang, a Politburo member, at a conference honouring farmers for the 2002-2007 period. He went on to say that the country is endebted to farmers that have turned Viet Nam into one of the world’s three major rice exporters.
Pham Quang Ton, Vice President of the Viet Nam Farmers' Association, reported that the number of rich farmer households throughout Viet Nam hit the 20 percent mark in 2006 while the number of poor farmer households was slashed to 19 percent.
He did however go on to warn that farmers will be more challenged than any other group by international integration.
"The Farmers' Association should work with government sectors to establish a strong relationship with scientists, businesspeople, and the State to help its members in a bid to integrate into the world economy," the administrator said.
He stressed that the Government has delivered an impressive support package to farmers, including infrastructure construction in rural areas, aiding farmers in shifting production methods and retraining programmes.-Enditem
