Da Nang wants bigger piece of Japanese pie

Da Nang (VNA) - A seminar, themed "Opportunities for Viet Nam-Japan trade and investment cooperation," was held in central Da Nang city on Aug. 13 to the delight of over the 100 participating businesses from Quang Nam , Thua Thien-Hue provinces and Da Nang city.

At the seminar, jointly organised by the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), delegates presented reports on business opportunities with Japan .

Ken Arakawa, an advisor from JETRO, said that the two countries' trade value in the first quarter of this year reached 2 billion USD, a huge increase over the same period last year. Japan now has 735 valid investment projects in Viet Nam with a total registered capital of 7.4 billion USD, ranking third among foreign investors.

Bui Dieu Thanh, Director of Da Nang 's Trade Department said that the city has established trade ties with six Japanese prefectures and cities. Da Nang 's trade with Japan last year was estimated at 90 million USD, including export turnover of 60 million USD, she said.

In the first half of this year, Da Nang began to exporte goods worth 27.3 million USD, a 19 percent year-on-year increase, Thanh said, adding that the exports were mainly handicrafts, fine art products, garments and seafood.

About 30 businesses in Da Nang currently ship their products to Japan and 23 Japanese businesses have been licensed for operations in the city with a total invested capital of 120 million USD.

At the seminar the Viet Nam Growth Fund (VGF) was introduced. The VGF, that's shareholders are Japanese banks, financial and trade companies, will initially pool 22 million USD for capital ventures that target expanding Vietnamese businesses.-Enditem
