Girl Recovering After Facial Tumor Surgery

Luc Thi Hai at the Hanoi’s K Hospital on July 17

A young woman who had a grapefruit-sized tumor removed from her face two weeks ago is recovering and able to eat and walk.

Doctor Nguyen Quoc Bao of the Hanoi’s K Hospital, where the procedure was performed, said 22-year-old Luc Thi Hai’s blood pressure and other indicators are normal.

Doctors have planned reconstructive facial surgery soon, as most of her features were disrupted by the tumor and surgery.

The tumor had blinded her left eye by pushing it out of its socket and distorted her teeth, leaving her unable to chew.

Her nose and mouth were also displaced by the growth.

Twelve days prior to Hai’s surgery, the hospital performed a similar operation on her younger sister Luc Thi Linh, 11, who had a smaller facial tumor.

The two are part of a San Diu ethnic family in which all six siblings have facial tumors.

Their 47-year-old father and 51-year-old mother are both without abnormalities.

The children were born without the growths, which began to develop at the ages of seven or eight.
