Vietnamese Shapes Inspire Designers

Shapely: Pieces by designer Diep Quoc Thanh on show at the Silver Sunshine Fashion Show.

They may be influenced by western fashion but their clothes are not copycat versions of Prada or Versace, young Vietnamese fashion designers say.

Sure, the clothes may be off-white or silver just like on the catwalks of Milan or New York this season but their shapes are distinctly Vietnamese, even distinctly their own.

Young designer Diep Quoc Thanh, whose works were on display at the Silver Sunshine fashion show in HCM City’s Zen Plaza last month, says: "Despite our lack of experience and difficulty in selling our clothes, we’ve always been professional at work."

While Thanh and the four other designers at the show love the latest foreign trends, Thanh, a fan of the Hollywood blockbuster The Devil Wears Prada, says, "It’s more interesting to create something in your own style rather than copy even a Prada or a Marc Jacobs."

His latest collection, Hoa Tren Cat (Flowers on the Sand), consists of 20 garments in yellowish-white and yellowish-brown with a touch of silver, the colours being the spring-summer rage in the west.

"My way is to adopt global styles but in an individual manner," the 26-year-old says, adding designing is like shopping – he thinks about what his friends and he want to wear before making clothes.

While Thanh prefers silk, Ha Noi-based designer Duc Hai likes denim because "everyone, irrespective of age and sex, west or east, is interested in [it]" .

At Ha Noi’s Fashion Week last week, Hai presented 30 garments in khakis and jeans, mostly ready-to-wear. His employer, Garment 10, a fashion company owned by the Viet Nam Textile Garment, supports his shows.

Trieu Thi Huong Giang, deputy director of Zen Plaza, which organises the Silver Sunshine, says: "Displaying and performing on the catwalk helps our designers and models pursue their dreams." Zen organises four fashion events a year, providing young designers a showcase.
