Most Fish Sauces In Vietnam Metro Urea-Tainted, Finds Study

Over two thirds of fish sauce samples tested last month in Ho Chi Minh City by the preventive health center had urea, a toxic substance, a source said Wednesday.

The source, quoting information from the center, said 27 of 39 samples collected contained the white odorless substance which is hazardous to health.

The samples were collected in a campaign to check the quality of processed food after many soya sauce brands were found to contain a cancer-causing substance called 3-MCPD.

According to experts, the urea is added either by the manufacturers to increase protein content or by fish suppliers to preserve freshness.

Urea can cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Too high concentrations of the substance in the blood can damage organs, especially the nervous system.
