Prime Minister to cement ties in Malaysia
Ha Noi (VNA) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will attend the 50th anniversary of Malaysia's Independence Day in Kuala Lumpur during his visit to the Southeast Asian country on August 30-September 1 at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.Viet Nam and Malaysia established their diplomatic ties in March 1973, beginning a relationship that has been growing steadfastly since then beyond a bilateral basis.
Aiming for stronger ties, a joint Viet Nam-Malaysia committee took shape in 1995 following the inception of the Viet Nam-Malaysia friendship association in each country in 1994.
Integral to the two countries' overall relations is economic cooperation. Since it enacted the Investment Law in 1998, Viet Nam has attracted a lot of investment from Malaysia , today it is home to 241 Malaysian-invested projects totalling 1.9 billion USD. The figure puts Malaysia 10th among 78 countries and territories investing in Viet Nam .
The two countries marked a surge in two-way trade that started with just 160 million USD in 1992 reaching 2.2 billion USD in 2005.
In the first seven months of this year, Viet Nam has imported 820 million USD in goods from Malaysia and raked in 614 million USD in export earnings from its peer in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
In 2002, Viet Nam and Malaysia teamed up in labour cooperation and 130,000 Vietnamese labourers have since then sent to work in Malaysia .
In April 2004, the two countries signed a joint statement on a multilateral cooperation framework in the 21st century drawn up during then Prime Minister Phan Van Khai's visit to Malaysia . The document provided grounds for the two countries to expand their cooperation in a wide range of areas.
To date, a total of 13 cooperation agreements have been inked between the two countries, ranging from economy, trade, science and technology, aviation, investment, post and telecommunications to banking, tourism, youth exchange and sports, in addition to a host of memoranda of understanding.-Enditem
