Singapore To Help Beef Up Vietnam’s Law System
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong (R) and Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Jayakumar
Singaporean experts agreed to help Vietnam revamp its legal framework at a meeting between two deputy prime ministers in Hanoi Thursday.
Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Jayakumar, who is also Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister of Law in Singapore, met his counterpart Truong Vinh Trong during his two-day visit to Vietnam.
Trong suggested that Singapore support Viet Nam in training officials in lawmaking, anti-corruption and administrative management.
Both mentioned the recent visit to the city state by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, saying that it would act as an impetus in implementing the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation Framework and another framework agreement on linking the Vietnamese and Singaporean economies.
Trong said that Singapore would play a critical role in moving the Southeast Asian bloc towards the construction of a dynamic community based on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
He appreciated Singapore’s support of Vietnam’s bid to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the country’s candidacy for a non-permanent membership seat on the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 term.
