Korea Will Take Care Of Vietnamese Brides, Assures Envoy

The South Korean ambassador to Vietnam has said his country will tighten regulations on marriages between Korean nationals and foreign brides, following the recent deaths of two Vietnamese wives.

Kim Eui-ki, who called on Ha Thi Khiet, president of the Vietnam Women's Association, Tuesday expressed regret over the deaths of the two Vietnamese women who were married and living in Korea. One died from her husband’s beatings while the other from falling while trying to escape domestic abuse.

He said that the Korean Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City and the Association of Koreans in Vietnam have held a ceremony to pray for the two women and raised more than US$5,000 for the victims' families in southern Vietnam.

He assured that the two cases were exceptions and that his government would soon have regulations in place to protect Vietnamese brides and laws to monitor marriage bureaus.

The bureaus would also need licenses to operate rather than mere registration which was the case now, he said, and there would be restrictions on their advertising.

Khiet called for working out a judicial aid agreement at the earliest between the two countries on the issue of Vietnamese wives living in Korea.

Meanwhile, the Korean government has announced a new regulation requiring people to declare their assets, education levels, and other personal information if they plan to marry a foreigner.

It has been distributing free leaflets with information about Korean laws, child upbringing, and other basics to Vietnamese wives.

By June this year, there were around 100,000 foreign brides living in Korea, most of them Chinese, Vietnamese, and Philippine.
