ASEAN officials meet to step up drug prevention

Ha Noi (VNA) – The regions' drug czars along with senior officials of ASEAN member countries convened in Ha Noi on August 21 for a two-day meeting on drug crimes and prevention at the 28th Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD).

Representatives from the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), the International Federation of Non-governmental Organisations for the Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse (IFNGO) and ASEAN NGOs also attended the workshop.

Information on drug crimes, public awareness campaigns, prevention, enforcement, poppy field eradication and farmer replacement projects and rehabilitation initiatives for drug addicts will top the list of the talks.

Viet Nam in the first six months of 2007 arrested 6,281 people for drug crimes and enjoyed a 12.5 percent decline in drug related cases and a 57.6 reduction in arrests over the previous year.

Also through the first six months of 2007, 37.5 ha of poppy fields and 0.4 ha of cannabis plots were destroyed. -Enditem
