Myanmar, Japan to set up earthquake warning system

Ha Noi (VNA) – Myanmar and Japan are joining forces to build an early warning earthquake system in Myanmar by setting up a seismographic network and record centre in the country.

The cooperation agreement will be made between the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) of Myanmar and the Japan International Cooperation Agency JICA), the official newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported on August 24.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will also help Myanmar develop an early warning system for Tsunami and other natural disasters.

Tsunami data from the regional early warning centre, already set up in the Indian Ocean, will be received by Myanmar 's early warning centre through a global telecommunications system.-Enditem
