Nation reaffirms sovereignty over Paracel, Spratly

Ha Noi (VNA) - Viet Nam has adequate historical evidence and sufficient legal basis to proclaim its sovereignty over both the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, said Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung, on August 15.

In response to Viet Nam News Agency correspondent's question about a report by the China Daily newspaper on August 10, on the approval of a tourism development plan by the Hainan special economic zone which includes visits to the Hoang Sa archipelago, the Foreign Ministry official reiterated Viet Nam's stance on the two islands.

Viet Nam strongly objects to China's approval to the plan to be conducted at Viet Nam's Paracel Islands. The action seriously violates Viet Nam's sovereignty and is unfavorable for the negotiation process between the two countries which aims to seek basic and long-term solutions for sea related issues, Dung said.

Viet Nam has a consistent policy of resolving disputes at sea through peaceful negotiations in accordance with international laws and practices, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2002 Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea as well as agreements reached by high-level leaders of the two countries on maintaining peace and stability on sea areas without using force or the threat of force, the spokesman concluded.-Enditem
