Viet Nam’s initiative on AIPA role applauded

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Viet Nam ’s initiative on increasing the role of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) cooperation with ASEAN in the building of the bloc’s charter was lauded at the second working day of the 28th AIPA meeting in Kuala Lumpur on August 21.

Leaders of AIPA member countries present at the meeting also agreed to prepare a separate decree on the ratification of the initiative.

The ongoing 28th AIPA meeting featured separate committees’ meetings, but much of the talk centred on the establishment of the Asian Monetary Fund.

After the economic committee meeting, leaders of eight AIPA member countries called for the creation of the long-proposed AMF as a protection mechanism from financial crisis or heavy currency speculation.

The meeting also touched on other issues including food and energy security, alternative energy sources, intellectual property rights, economic integration and bridging development gap amongst ASEAN nations.

AIPA leaders also agreed that member countries iron out issues surrounding drug and human trafficking and maritime security.

Delegates also called on ASEAN countries to ink a joint agreement on trans-national crime and set up an AIPA advisory group to broaden AIPA’s profile at international forums.

At the committee meeting on social affairs, delegates discussed measures to combat the trafficking of women and children, regional epidemics, environmental protection, and protection mechanism for guest workers and their children.

Later the same day, AIPA members also had talks with observers, including Brunei , Myanmar , Australia , Canada , China , the European Union, Japan , New Zealand , Papua New Guinea , Russia , the Republic of Korea and the US.- Enditem
