A production firm representing a famous Vietnamese singer has demanded damages from a US studio for using three songs for which the former has exclusive copyrights.H.T Production, which represents singer Dan Truong, sent a notice Monday to Thuy Nga Productions Center based in California and other agencies, for using copyrighted material without permission.Last week Thuy Nga brought out singer Minh Tuyet’s Album Vol. 4, Yeu mot nguoi – Song ben mot nguoi (Love one, Live with another), featuring 11 songs, three of whose rights Dan Truong had bought.The songs are O noi do em cuoi (That place where you smile) and Nhung an tinh xua (The past deep affection) composed by Hoai An, and Vang trang dem troi (The moon at night) with Vietnamese lyrics by composer Le Quang.Hoang Tuan, director of H.T Production, said deals with Hoai An gave the company the exclusive rights to O noi do em cuoi and Nhung an tinh xua until December 2008 and July 2009 respectively.H.T had also purchased the copyright of the song Vang trang dem troi in December 1998.Tuan told Thuy Nga to postpone the release of Minh Tuyet’s latest volume and pay for its copyright violation.What the parties sayThuy Nga’s representative in Vietnam, Quynh Chi, told Thanh Nien her studio never violated copyrights.“We paid Le Quang to use his Vang trang dem troi without knowing about the exclusive contract [he had] signed with H.T Production.”As for the other two songs, she claimed she thought Minh Tuyet had already obtained permission from composer Hoai An to use them.Hoai An said neither Minh Tuyet nor Thuy Nga had contacted him about the songs.
