US Hospital Ship Leaves Vietnam After Treating Poor

The US hospital ship Peleliu departed Vietnam’s central Danang city Thursday, wrapping up a ten-day visit during which it provided free treatment to underprivileged people.

The vessel’s 160-strong medical staff from the US, South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Canada, India, and Malaysia provided dental services and medical checkups and offered free drugs to 15,000 people.

The ship also dispatched a team of volunteers to carry out repairs and construction projects at local health centers, orphanages, and schools.

Its medical staff interacted with their Vietnamese counterparts from the Danang Hospital, the Health Prevention Center, the Dermatology Hospital, and the Danang Eye Hospital.

Equipped with four operation rooms, 15 intensive care beds, and 400 normal beds, the ship has participated in many humanitarian missions in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Peleliu was next headed for other Asian countries, Kenneth J. Fairfax, the American consul in Ho Chi Minh City, said.
