Deputy PM Khiem highlights need for language retention

Phnom Penh (VNA)- Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem has urged overseas Vietnamese in Cambodia to teach Vietnamese to their children for fears of losing a key component of their cultural identity for ever.

Khiem, who is also Foreign Minister, met with a group of overseas Vietnamese at the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh on August 22, during his visit to the neighbouring nation to attend the 9 th session of the Viet Nam-Cambodia Joint Committee.

The Deputy PM reiterated the Party and State’s policy to consider the Vietnamese community abroad an integral part of the nation.

He said the Vietnamese Government has delivered a number of policies in support of rights of overseas-based Vietnamese.

“Like their compatriots in other countries, the Vietnamese community in Cambodia should pay better attention to teaching Vietnamese to their children in an effort to preserve and promote the traditional culture among the younger generations,” Khiem said.

The senior Government official took the opportunity to inaugurate an official website of the Vietnamese embassy in Cambodia.--Enditem
