Police Set To Indict 38 Gangsters From North-South Drug Cartel

Vietnamese police have wrapped up investigation into a major drug gang they arrested for trafficking 18 kg of heroin from the north to Ho Chi Minh City and seek to press charges against 38 members.

They caught three members in April last year in Ha Tay province with one kilogram of the drug.

The gang, headed by 40-year-old Tran Huy Dong, a thug from Hai Phong city, reportedly entered the drug trade in 2004.

He and his henchmen in the northern mountains used to transport the drugs to Hanoi and other northern provinces before taking them to HCMC by train.

Both his wife and mistress worked for the gang, with the former handling distribution in the north and the latter in the south.

The police said the gang had so far brought around 18 kg of heroin into HCMC, earning VND1.6 billion (US$100,000).

Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Possessing, trading, or trafficking more than 600 grams (1.3 pounds) of heroin or 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of opium is punishable by death or life in prison.
