Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has urged the central province of Thua Thien-Hue to focus on developing the service industries of tourism, post and telecommunications, transport and software production, in order to speed up economic growth.
Working with the provincial authorities on August 12, Deputy PM Hung also asked the province to build the former imperial city of Hue - a cultural and tourist centre - into a developed city that houses securities and real estate trading centres.
The government official pointed out the need to encourage the development of vocational training to provide skilled workers for industrial zones in the region as well as for foreign labour markest.
He also pledged to pour more budget into projects to expand and upgrade the Phu Bai airport, help local fishermen who are living on their boats to settle down on land, and speed up hunger elimination and poverty reduction endeavour in the province.
Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, reported that despite difficulties caused by climatic conditions and animal diseases, Thua Thien-Hue posted a high economic growth rate of over 13 percent in the first seven months of this year.
The province attracted 41 foreign-invested projects with a combined registered capital of 595 million USD in the reviewed period, while its total social investment exceeded 3.13 trillion VND (196 million USD).
In addition, Thua Thien-Hue made remarkable achievements in hunger elimination and poverty reduction as it reduced the rate of local households living under the poverty line to 15 percent from 18.4 percent last year.
Earlier, Deputy PM Hung toured Thua Thien-Hue’s neighbouring province of Quang Tri where provincial authorities proposed the government consider Quang Tri part of the central key economic region.
The authorities urged the government to allocate the World Bank’s official development assistance (ODA) capital for its projects to build flood control dykes in Hai Lang district, and construct a reservoir in Cam Lo district to serve daily life and production, and Cua Viet bridge.
Quang Tri province also called for assistance from the government to carry out projects to relocate local people from flood-prone areas, build breakwaters along river banks and a hospital in the province, and remove difficulties that are faced by the Lao Bao economic zone.-Enditem | |
