Vietnam Government Sends Aid To Storm-Hit Provinces

Deputy PM Nguyen Sinh Hung meet with family of a storm victim

The Vietnamese government gave Saturday funding of VND85 billion (US$5.25 million) and 3,000 tons of rice to the central provinces devastated by a tropical storm, landslides, and flash floods last week.

The money is meant mainly for addressing health and environmental problems.

Initial estimates from the provinces put the number of deaths at 61 and economic losses at trillions of dong (VND1 trillion = over US$61.8 million).

The two coastal provinces of Ha Tinh and Quang Binh each got VND20 billion, and the five central highlands provinces of Daklak, Daknong, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, and Kontum the rest.

Ha Tinh and Quang Binh also shared the 3,000 tons of rice.

The prime minister instructed the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to look into the threat of food shortages in the provinces.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung spent two days on a fact-finding trip to Ha Tinh and Quang Binh.

The tropical storm, which weakened into a depression last Monday, is the worst to hit Vietnam so far this year.

Flooding has disrupted rail services since Tuesday, with sections of the track damaged or still submerged in three central provinces, a railway official said.

It has also damaged nearly 55,000 homes and displaced 274,000 people. Over 100,000 hectares of crops were also submerged, the government said.

August-October is the storm season in Vietnam. Last year 10 hit the country, setting off floods and landslides that killed 500 people. They also caused injuries to nearly 3,000, and destruction worth US$1.2 billion.
