Vietnamese Grapefruit Different Variety, Not Carcinogenic: Expert
A Vietnamese fruit research agency Thursday said that the species of grapefruit that causes breast cancer in women is different from the one grown in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese media recently quoted an article from the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper which said eating grapefruit could increase breast cancer risk by a third.
The UK paper quoted a research carried out by the universities of Southern California and Hawaii which revealed that eating as little as a quarter of a pomelo daily raised the danger by 30 per cent among older women.
Grapefruit prices went into a freefall in Vietnam following the report.
But Vo Huu Thoai of the Southern Institute for Research on Fruits said the dangerous grapefruit variety was citrus paradisi, grown and consumed mainly in the US and Europe.
The Vietnamese species, citrus maxima, was not only safe but also healthy since it reduced blood pressure and lowered cholesterol levels in the blood, Thoai told a seminar in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre Thursday.
Citrus maxima is native to Southeast Asia and widely cultivated in China, Vietnam, India, and other Asian nations.
