Police Arrest Buddhist Monk, 8 Others

Police have arrested a dissident Buddhist monk and eight other people, accusing them of planning illegal demonstrations against Vietnam’s communist government.

Authorities arrested monk Thích Không Tánh here last week, alleging that his outlawed United Buddhist Church of Vietnam plotted an illicit protest, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The report described the church’s chief, the Venerable Thích Quảng Độ, as a ''gang leader,'' and said he had worked preparing anti-government protests in Hà Nội and Sài Gòn.

The article said he and his supporters collaborated with unspecified ''reactionary forces in exile,'' raising money from overseas to finance the demonstrations.
