Vietnam PM Visits Malaysia For Independence Day

Vietnam PM Visits Malaysia For Independence Day

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is in Malaysia today celebrating the country’s 50th Independence Day.

This is Dung’s first trip to Malaysia after his re-election late last month. The visit, from August 30 to September 1, is made at the invitation of his Malaysian counterpart Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Dung made a week long tour to five other Southeast Asian countries earlier this month to reaffirm Vietnam's commitment to further expand cooperation with its neighbors.

During the tour, Dung visited Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, and Brunei.

All these countries, together with Malaysia and Vietnam, are members of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

Malaysia’s Independence Day – August 31 – locally known as Hari Merdeka, commemorates the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule. In a wider context, it is to celebrate the formation of Malaysia.
