Vietnam Ministry Warns Hospitals After Racket In Wastes Unearthed

The Vietnamese health ministry has instructed hospitals and medical centers nationwide to thoroughly check their waste control and processing facilities and report back by September.

In an official dispatch Thursday, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen told hospitals and health centers to assess the process of collecting, categorizing, transporting, and incinerating waste.

She also warned them to fully comply with environmental laws and regulations on managing medical wastes, and reminded them of the ban on selling or handing over untreated waste to outsiders.

According to the ministry’s statistics, there are 1,050 hospitals and over 10,000 health centers and research institutes of which just one third, mostly in large cities, have installed waste treatment facilities. But even they are usually ineffective.

Earlier this week, Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi was fined VND20 million (US$1,200) for negligence after some of its employees were found selling untreated waste for recycling.

One employee has been fired and the hospital has pledged to find and punish the others involved.

Police and other agencies are investigating further to initiate criminal proceedings against the culprits, and to unearth similar rackets at other city hospitals.
