The Vietnamese government has instructed local authorities to work on eliminating accident “hot spots” by the November-end at the latest.

Minister of Transport Ho Nghia Dung told a conference on road safety held in Hanoi Thursday that the degraded traffic infrastructure too was to blame for the road calamities, adding infrastructure maintenance and overhaul were vital.

The government was ready to allot funds for immediately eliminating accident-prone spots.

Remedial work had to be undertaken on these spots and reported to the ministry by November 30.

He also called for the completion of national schemes aimed at preventing road accidents on mountains and slopes, and putting up of warning signs at railway crossings without barriers or automatic warning equipment.

Around 7,700 road accidents had occurred in the first six months, killing some 6,900 people, the National Steering Committee for Traffic Safety reported.
