Inter-Korean summit postponed due to floods

Seoul (VNA) - The second Inter-Korean Summit will be postponed till early October due to deadly floods that have rocked the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The DPRK has asked to postpone this month's summit with the Republic of Korea (RoK) because the DPRK is dealing with the consequences of the recent floods, RoK presidential spokesman Cheon Ho-seon said on August 18.

The DPRK showed its goodwill by accepting RoK's proposal to hold the summit on October 2-4, the spokesman added.

Earlier, the two Koreas agreed to conduct the summit between RoK President Roh Moo-hyun and DPRK Leader Kim Jong-il in Pyong Yang from August 28-30, that was to focus on discussing large-scale economic cooperation and the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

DPRK media said on August 17 that 220 people were killed or reported missing by floods that struck the country early this month. The floods forced the evacuation of 300,000 residents and damaged more than 46,000 houses and 11 percent of the country's entire agriculturally viable land.--Enditem
