Australia funds Viet Nam veterans health study

Sydney (VNA) - The Australian Government has announced 13.5 million AUD (roughly 10.6 million USD) in funding for a study of veterans who took part in the Viet Nam war and their families, local media reported.

Australian Veteran's Affairs Minister Bruce Billson said about 200,000 people will take part in the study and the first results should be available by 2009.

"Recent research has identified that there are some physical ailments that are in greater incidence amongst children of Viet Nam veterans - cleft palate and spina bifida - but we think we need to go beyond that," he was quoted by the ABC News as saying.

Researchers from the Centre for Military and Veterans Health will look at the clinical and mental wellbeing of veterans, as well as their family dynamics and social situation.

They will also study veterans from Australia's involvement in East Timor. --Enditem
