Towards greater Viet Nam-Myanmar cooperation

Ha Noi (VNA) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will pay an official visit to Myanmar from August 14-15 at the invitation of his Myanmar counterpart Soe Win.

This is PM Dung's first official visit to Myanmar since he was re-elected to be Viet Nam's Prime Minister. The trip aims to affirm Viet Nam's foreign policy of attaching importance to developing cooperation with other countries as well as to discuss measures to bolster multifaceted cooperation between Viet Nam and regional countries, including Myanmar.

Over the last years, the Viet Nam-Myanmar traditional friendly relations and multi-faceted cooperation have been positively consolidated and developed. The two countries have shared information and view and collaborated in many issues in bilateral cooperation as well as at regional and international forums. They have also actively exchanged delegations at different levels.

The two countries economic and trade relations have seen positive development. In 2006, two-way trade turnover reached 70 million USD, a year-on-year increase of 21.1 percent. Their total trade turnover hit 23.4 million USD in the first four months of 2007. The two countries have committed to bringing this year's figure to 100 million USD.

Viet Nam exported pharmaceutical products to Myanmar and imported ood works and agricultural products from the country.

Viet Nam and Myanmar held five joint commission sessions with the latest taking place in December 2004. The two sides agreed to further develop cooperation in trade, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, industry, healthcare, tourism and aviation. The two countries set up a joint commercial committee to boost bilateral trade.

Besides bilateral cooperation activities, Viet Nam and Myanmar also took part in relations within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and a number of regional organizations, such as the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) and the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS). They share close points of views and regularly coordinate at regional and international forums.-Enditem
