Viet Nam, Laos mark 30th anniversary of border treaty

Vientiane (VNA) – Viet Nam and Laos have celebrated the 30th anniversary of the signing of their border demarcation treaty in Vientiane on August 18.

Lao Permanent Deputy Foreign Minister Phongsavath Boupha and Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Huy Quang attended the function, emphasising the significance of the Viet Nam-Laos Border Demarcation Treaty. The agreement demonstrates the mutual trust between the two parties, states and people, which is based on the principle of equality, respect for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference into each other’s internal issues, they stressed.

Under the treaty, Viet Nam and Laos have completed the planting of landmarks on their 2,000 km common borderline. They have also finalised the Laos-Viet Nam border map.

The treaty in conjunction with a protocol on border road regulations and the opening of six international border gates on the common borderline have contributed to increasing trade and tourism between the two neighbouring countries.

The ceremony to mark the event was hosted by the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Border Department and the Vietnamese Embassy in Vientiane.-Enditem
