Con Dao island to turn into tourist paradise

Ba Ria (VNA) – The Vung Tau Province’s People’s Committee has chosen a French-American design to develop Con Dao Island into a tourist hotspot by 2020 while preserving its famed historic sites and landscapes.

French design company CREATIS and America’s MH Golden Sands beat off eight others in the design competition to share the top prize of 40,000 USD.

The judges said their plan not only fully met the project requirements, but also offered a new vision for further development of the island.

Vo Thanh Ky, vice chairman of the People’s Committee, said: “The clever design will ensure sustainable development for the island and preserve its natural and historical features and soon make it a leading tourism destination.”

The plan excludes industrial development for Con Dao due to limitations like low population, lack of land, and environmental issues.

But it will have power plants, water-pumping stations, and waste treatment plants. Solar energy will be exploited in a major way.

There will be a focus on tourism thanks to its beautiful landscapes, silky sand beaches, primeval forests, and, especially, historical relics.

The design also aims to exploit the remains of its notorious prison, Hang Duong Heroes Cemetery, and other historical sites.

It appears as if it won’t be long before the former “hell on earth” becomes a major tourist destination.-Enditem
