Corrupt customs official jailed following decade-long hunt
A Ho Chi Minh City court sentenced Thursday a former customs official who had evaded the law for a decade to five years in prison for taking bribes of VND9.5 million (US$593.7).

Nguyen Hoang Dung, former deputy head of the city Customs Department’s anti-smuggling section, was arrested last October after a 10-year manhunt. He had been wanted for taking bribes from Tan Truong Sanh Company and allowing it to smuggle in electronic goods worth over VND1.1 trillion ($68.75 million).

His colleagues accused him of taking VND247 million but Dung only admitted to getting VND9.5 million.

His office was found to have taken over VND2.2 billion from Tan Truong Sanh, and then section head Phung Long That, who received the most money, was executed last year.

The company owner Tran Dam was also sentenced to death but his sentence was later commuted to life after the country’s president pardoned him.

More than 30 other customs officials too were involved in the racket.
