HCM City banks vie for Vietnamese-Chinese clients
Ha Noi (VNA) – Located mainly in Ho Chi Minh City, the Hoa community (Vietnamese of Chinese origin) is a strong potential client group for many banks in the city.“There are half a million Hoa people in HCM City, making up 50 percent of the total number living in the country,” said Truong Tu Muoi, Director of the Cho Lon Economic Development Centre.
With production skills and business expertise and an ability to fast access the market, many Hoa people have established their own businesses and gained a firm foothold in the country with companies such as the Binh Tien Consumer Goods Company (Biti’s), the Kinh Do Corporation and the Tan Cuong Thanh Wire and Cable Corporation. Their capital demand for production and business development has stirred up competition between all banks in the city.
The Sai Gon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SCB) has opened transaction sites in Hoa communities. SCB clients are provided with consultations and given loan advice with preferential interest rates besides being exempt from loan service fees.
The Hoa business circle has developed dramatically with the number of businesses accounting for more than 30 percent of the city’s total, said SCB Deputy General Director Nguyen The Linh. SCB always considers Hoa businesses as strategic clients, their loans make up more than 50 percent of SCB’s total, Linh added.
Besides SCB, the Sai Gon Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank (Sacombank) has had a branch set up since 2003 to serve small traders in Cho Lon areas, most of its clients there are Hoa people.
Not to be left behind, Sacombank has recently opened its Hoa Viet branch – the first banking model to serve Hoa clients inside and outside the country with professional staff members who are fluent in Chinese and have good knowledge of Chinese customs, traditions and culture. All documents and leaflets issued to clients at the branch are in Chinese.
Earlier, Sacombank received the permission from the State Bank of Viet Nam to open a representative office in Nanning city, China’s Guangxi province. President of Sacombank’s Board of Directors Dang Van Thanh expressed his hope to lure more clients to its Hoa Viet branch through the rep. office.
In addition to domestic banks, many foreign banks operating in Viet Nam such as the Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) are also planning to develop services for Hoa clients.-Enditem
