Hanoi: 70% Of Tourists Do Not Return

It is estimated that 70% of tourists do not return to Hanoi, which people think reflects the unattractiveness of the capital city. However, Mai Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Culture and Tourism Department, has a different viewpoint.

For the last few years, Hanoi has been recognised by international tourists as one of the most attractive destinations in Asia. However, many people do not believe the vote result, as Hanoi, in their eyes, is actually not attractive. The capital city lacks entertainment places, and travellers do not have any thing to do in the evenings and anywhere to go.

What would you say about the modest number of returning tourists?

The essence of travelling is discovery. Therefore, if tourists travel to a country this year, they will travel to another next year. There are 200 countries and territories worldwide, and each country has a lot of attractive destinations. If you think this way, you would find the 70% unreturning tourists a normal figure. It would be impossible to expect tourists to return at a high percentage.

But if more tourists return, this can show the attractiveness of Hanoi?

The thing a nation should care about is how many percent the number of tourists coming to the country this year is higher than the number coming last year. In the last seven years, the number of foreign tourists coming to Hanoi has increased by 17%, higher than the growth rate of tourists coming to Vietnam in general, at 10-12%.

I think that it is normal to see 30% of foreign tourists returning to Vietnam, and it would be a tragedy if 90% of tourists returned. If so, this means that Vietnam could not attract new travellers. Tourism development does not strive for a high percentage of returning tourists.

Who are they, the 30% of returning tourists?

They are mostly travellers-businessmen, who come to seek business opportunities. In the world, the ratio of returning tourists is 20%; therefore, the ratio of 30% for Hanoi is relatively high.

What is the attractiveness of Hanoi? Why do you think Hanoi is recognised as one of the most attractive cities in Asia, while many people do not think so?

If travellers wanted to go to big entertainment complexes like Disneyland, water parks and high-rise buildings, they would not come to Hanoi. Those who come to Hanoi all want to look for the differentiation in the culture of Vietnam compared to other nations and territories. What is the differentiation? Original architecture, peaceful and beautiful landscapes, friendly and openhearted people.

For example, Hanoi’s ancient streets are different from the ones in other countries in the world with small streets and ‘tube’ houses, where people live and do business. Hanoi’s landscapes have been recognised as some of the most original and beautiful in Southeast Asia. As for cuisine, Hanoi is considered one of the three cities in Asia which can offer the tastiest food. Hanoi can also take pride in its history of 1,000 years.
