Japanese PM wants closer ties with ASEAN nations

Jakarta (VNA) - Japan is determined to promote closer relations with ASEAN countries, said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a round table in Jakarta on August 20.

Addressing the conference entitled “ Japan and a caring and sharing ASEAN at the heart of a dynamic Asia ”, PM Abe said that the focus of his tenure is to continue building Japan into a more economically prosperous and socially stable country, while adhering to democracy, thus contributing to make the maintenance of peace in Asia and the world.

The key for Japan to hit the targets, Abe said, is to keep its reform agenda on the right track, increase productivity and develop new technologies.

Abe believes that Japan will only be if the world’s second largest economy ratchets up cooperation with ASEAN and greater other countries in Asia in general.

Japan , one of the world’s most rapidly aging countries, has embarked on an “opening door” policy to welcome inflows of people, goods, investment and knowledge from the rest of the continent.

During his three-day visit to Indonesia , PM Abe has signed with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono a free trade agreement that will remove tariffs on 90 percent of their bilateral trade. According to the Kyodo News, Japan and ASEAN are expected to finalise a free trade agreement at a meeting of their economic ministers late this week in Manila.- Enditem
