ASEAN Standing Committee meets in Singapore

Ha Noi (VNA) – The 1 st meeting of the 41 st Standing Committee of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) kicked off in Singapore on August 20, aiming to set the tone for the bloc’s work ahead as Singapore takes over the chairmanship of the 10-member grouping.

At the opening ceremony, Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo said that ASEAN has always worked on the basis of cooperation and consensus, foreign media reported.

“ Singapore will work with that attitude in mind that we can succeed if we work closely and in harmony with all our ASEAN colleagues," Yeo said.

ASEAN Secretary General Ong Keng Yong mentioned the development of a single market, saying that to do so, ASEAN has to help its less developed economies namely Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar and Viet Nam more forward.

During the two-day meeting, participants discussed the ASEAN Charter, economic integration and relevant issues.

ASEAN is comprised of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.-Enditem
