Nuclear envoys hold talks on peace in Northeast Asia

eoul (VNA) - Officials from six nations working to denuclearise the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) kicked off their two-day meetings in Moscow on August 21 to discuss security in Northeast Asia.

The working-level talks stem from a February accord signed by the DPRK and five other nations in talks on ending the DPRK's nuclear programme, in which the DPRK agreed to shut down and eventually disable its key nuclear facilities while openly declaring all of its nuclear programmes.

The first round of talks, which also discussed the denuclearisation of the DPRK and the provision of promised energy assistance to the country, came shortly after the landmark denuclearisation deal was signed on February 13.

This week's talks came after Pyongyang shut down its nuclear facilities at Yongbyon last month under the February agreement in exchange for 50,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil from the Republic of Korea.

High on the agenda of the meetings are the DPRK's next denuclearisation steps to disable the Yongbyon facilities and its declaration of its nuclear programmes, as well as when and how 950,000 tonnes of heavy oil promised in return will be provided to the DPRK.

A plenary session on the DPRK’s nuclear programme is scheduled to take place in early next month.-Enidtem
