State President receives new ambassadors

Ha Noi (VNA) - President Nguyen Minh Triet met with the freshly posted ambassadors of Tanzania, Uruguay, Germany and the United States of America to Viet Nam as they gathered to present their credentials in Ha Noi, on August 20.

President Triet then went on to hold separate meetings with the envoys. Present at the reception were also Nguyen Huu Luc, Vice Chairman of the Presidential Office; Le Cong Phung, Deputy Foreign Minister and Do Xuan Dong, Assistant to the State President.

Speaking at his meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam Michael W. Michalak, the Vietnamese President said that Viet Nam-US ties have never been healthier in the areas of diplomacy, trade, investment, education and science and technology cooperation.

The State leader agreed with the US emissary that due to the differing historical, cultural and development contexts between the two countries, there still remained some differences of opinion in a few areas, but was confident that they would be ironed out through frank, open and constructive dialogue.

The meeting briefly looked back to the past, as the leader committed to aiding the US in the search of American troops still missing in action during the war and acknowledged the US's efforts to help Agent Orange/Dioxin victims and the large swaths of Viet Nam's land that are still adversely impacted by the dioxin.

The new US Ambassador, said that commerce and education would prove to be the focus of his tenure here and pointed to Viet Nam 's greatly improved business climate as a key indicator of the continued development of the economic relationship between the two countries.

Michalak also said that he was targeting an increase in Vietnamese student numbers in US universities by 100 percent within his first three years in Ha Noi.

Frequent rounds of discussions between the US and Viet Nam have been instrumental in the development of ties and have fostered an environment of mutual understanding while raising the Southeast Asian nation's profile in Washington, the career diplomat said.

Receiving Tanzanian ambassador Omar Ramadhan, Uruguayan ambassador Pablo Sader and German ambassador Rolf Peter Gottfried Schulze, President Triet said he was pleased with the state of affairs between Viet Nam and their respective countries and went on to thank them for their support to Viet Nam's bid to join the World Trade Organisation. -Enditem
