Thai PM calls for big vote turn out

Bangkok (VNA) - Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont on August 18, a day ahead of a national referendum on the draft constitution, delivered a television speech, encouraging the Thais to cast their ballots en masse.

PM Surayud said August 19 is an important day for the Thai people because they will be directly participating in national politics and that the country's transition to democracy will be achieved if more than half of the 45 million eligible voters turn out to the polls.

The PM again stated that he would give up politics after a general election scheduled for later this year. If the draft charter is not adopted, the junta government will choose one of 17 previous constitutions, but analysts have said that eventuality would lead to a host of new problems.

The referendum is being viewed as a test for the existing government following campaigns that call for high vote turn out and despite boycotts from the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) and the Thai Rak Thai Group.--Enditem
