Proceedings against accused bomber continue

Bangkok (VNA) - Thailand's Southern Criminal Court on August 16 continued proceedings against Vo Van Duc, a Vietnamese-born US citizen, accused of attempting to bomb the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok six years ago.

This was the third hearing against Vo Van Duc since he was extradited from the US to Thailand last December at the request of Thai law enforcement.

At the hearing, the court will hear the indictment and witnesses' testimonies before handing down a verdict.

According to the Thai law, the penalty for the terrorist crime ranges from seven years to life imprisonment.

After initially fleeing Thailand to the US, Vo Van Duc was put on trial by a US court, but was acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

During the two previous hearings at the Southern Bangkok Court, Vo Van Duc and his lawyer argued that he was facing "double jeopardy" and being charged with the same crime twice.

However, Thai judges brushed aside the argument and emphasised that the Thai law does not follow US precedence therefore the defendant has not been charged with the same crime twice.--Enditem
