ASEAN boosts dialogue and investment with South America

Buenos Aires (VNA) - Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the South American Common Market (MERCOSUR) pledged on August 22 to strengthen political dialogues and increase investment and commercial exchanges between the two blocs.

The commitment was made during a meeting in Brazil between heads of delegations from the MERCOSUR and ASEAN member economies at the Forum for East Asia - Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).

The two blocs have a lot of potential for cooperation, especially in trade, which should be promoted with shared efforts from both sides, Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said, adding that the MERCOSUR has full conditions to boost its exports to the ASEAN, a newly-emerging market with over 500 million consumers and a GDP of about 700 billion USD.

Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge also urged the two blocs to reinforce relations between their leading officials, which he believed to be an impetus for signing a trade agreement between the two blocs.

MERCOSUR includes Argentina , Brazil , Paraguay and Uruguay and the ASEAN includes Brunei , Cambodia , Indonesia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , Singapore , Thailand , the Philippines and Viet Nam.-Enditem
