The commitment was made by Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, and Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Jayakumar, who is also Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister of Law of Singapore, during their talks in Ha Noi on August 16.

The Singaporean Deputy PM is on a two-day visit to Viet Nam, that began on August 16, at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart.

Deputy PM Trong proposed Singapore support Viet Nam in training officials in the building of laws, anti-corruption and administrative management.

Both spoke glowingly of PM Dung’s visit to the Lion City and stated that it would act as an impetus in implementing a Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation Framework in the 21st century and a framework agreement on linking Vietnamese and Singaporean economies, which were signed in March 2004 and December 2005, respectively.

Deputy PM Trong took the opportunity to congratulate Singapore on its role as Chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2007 and said that Singapore would play a critical role in moving the bloc towards the construction of a dynamic ASEAN community.

He concluded by expressing his appreciation for Singapore’s support to Viet Nam’s bid in joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the country’s candidacy for a non-permanent membership seat on the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 term.-Enditem
