Thailand to work with Malaysia on restive south

Ha Noi (VNA) - Thailand will work with Malaysia to bring economic progress to three violence plagued Thai provinces in a bid to quell an insurgency, Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said on August 22.

"I came here to strengthen Malaysia and Thailand relations. We want to have social and economic cooperation. We have to help each other solve the problem in the south," PM Surayud was quoted as saying in Malaysia ’s northern resort island of Penang , where he has a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Previously, on August 21, the two leaders oversaw the signing of an educational agreement. Under which, Malaysia will provide scholarships for students and training courses for teachers from the mainly Muslim southern Thai provinces.

The agreement will establish links between educational institutions in the two countries and about 100 Thai teachers are expected to be sent to Malaysia at the end of the month for training.

Meanwhile Tongthong Chandransu, deputy permanent secretary of Thailand 's Justice Ministry said the southern problem will take time to return to normalcy. "We need Malaysia 's assistance to address this problem in the south. Close cooperation will benefit both of us," he added.-Enditem
