Viet Nam Celebrates National Day

Viet Nam’s senior leaders led by Communist Party’s General Secretary Nong Duc Manh paid floral tributes to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum on Thursday on the occasion of the 59th Independence Day, September 2.

Among those who attended the event were former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu, President Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An and President of the Fatherland Front Central Committee Pham The Duyet.

The leaders later attended a meeting held by Ha Noi authorities to celebrate the event. At least 1,000 people attended the meeting, including many veteran revolutionaries and peace activists like veteran French Communists Henri Martin and Raymonde Dien, known for their support to Viet Nam during the struggle for liberation.

In his speech, Ha Noi Mayor Nguyen Quoc Trieu recounted the hard road to independence and promised to build on the revolution’s heroic spirit to make Ha Noi a prosperous, civilised, and modern city.

HCM City Party Secretary Nguyen Minh Triet and other senior leaders attended another meeting organised in HCM City to mark the occasion.

At the meeting, People’s Committee chairman Le Thanh Hai promised to boost the city’s economy and work harder to improve the lives of people.

Tat Thanh Cang, President of the municipal Youth’s Union, called on the youth to play a larger role in building a prosperous, democratic and civilised Viet Nam.

As part of the celebrations, a five-day photo exhibition began in the city. The exhibition, held at the Youth Cultural House provides historical pictures and documents from Ho Chi Minh’s life.
